Awkunanaw Women in Politics

Image
Politics is said to be the activities of the government, members of law-making organization or people who try to influence the way a country is governed.  The big question is, how are women in politics perceived or those who intend to to go into politics? Are they supported by the male gender? or should the female gender resign to fate and only carry out their duties in the kitchen and the other room?  If there's any woman from Awkunanaw clan that has ever held any political appointment, is certainly by a share stroke of luck or because destiny played a greater part. Take the case of Hon. Onyinye Ugwu (Mrs) a member of the Enugu state of Assembly,  Hon Ifeoma Ugwu (PDP ward 1councillor), Hon (Mrs) Theresa Egbo (former chief whip Enugu state) for an example, and this is because men are seen as the breadwinner of the family and age-long tradition and culture which placed men above women, forgetting the fact that most women are now the breadwinners of thei...

UMU OKUNANO : Our role in the forth coming Council Elections

We are currently in the throes of a monumental and historic local government area council’s election. One that will shape the direction of our communities and the Okunano clan for the next few years to come. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that we as a people and free citizens of Nigeria will be faced with an important decision. Today, we are facing unprecedented challenges. It is time for this generation of Okunanians to address our problems and seize the profound opportunities before us. Today, our clan, Okunano is calling us to active duty. Our people needs us. Needs us to get off our couches and participate. You can’t just say you love Okunano and then remain silent. Patriotism and love of Okunano are more than just feeding the hungry ones amongst us with momentary fish to quench their hunger for the now; it is accepting the challenge and responsibility to do your part to participate. You can and will make our clan okunano stronger by acceptin...

OKPA - Traditional Crop of the Month:Bambara groundnut

Image
Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is variously known as izindlubu (Zulu, South Africa); Jugo beans (South Africa); Ntoyo cibemba (Zambia); Gurjiya or Kwaruru (Hausa, Nigeria); Okpa (Igbo, Nigeria); Epa- Roro (Yoruba, Nigeria); Nyimo beans (Zimbabwe); etc . Description Bambara groundnut is a grain legume grown mainly by subsistence farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. It is cultivated for its subterranean pods, is extremely hardy and produces reasonable yields even under conditions of drought and low soil fertility. The pods are approximately 1.5 cm long, and may be wrinkled and slightly oval or round, containing one to two seeds. The colour of the seeds varies from black, dark-brown, red, white, cream or a combination of these colours. At harvest, i.e. when the pods ripen, the plant is extracted from the soil, exposing the subterranean nuts. The nuts may be eaten fresh (i.e. boiled or roasted before they are dried) as snacks but the majority of the nuts a...

FORGIVING OURSELVES

FORGIVENESS: The art of forgiveness is a powerful force by its own right. There's nothing that brings tears to my eyes like watching or witnessing a scene where a hardened heart breaks up to forgive. Forgiveness cleanses, heals and strengthens anytime. In Okunano, there's so much to be forgiven..and we must all start by forgiving ourselves, forgiving our brothers and sisters.

The Igbo Tribe

The Igbos are profoundly religious and worship many Gods  The ancient Igbo religion and traditions that they follow is known as Odinani They believe that there are three levels of divine beings: the highest level is the supreme god Chukwu who the Igbo believed all things came from him and that he controlled earth, heaven, and the rest of the spirit world. Underneath Chukwu are lesser gods, called Umuagbara, and under these are the Ndi Ichie, who are the spirits of dead people. The Igbos also believe in reincarnation and saw death as a transient phase between life and the spirit world. They throught that when someone dies, he or she starts a new life in the spirit world. After a time in the spirit world, a dead person would be reborn as a new person and the cycle would continue on. Women Women in Igbo society are sadly oppressed group with no power and had no respect outside of their roles as a mother and/or a wife. -Marriage is not only a matter of the man and the woman al...
