UMU OKUNANO : Our role in the forth coming Council Elections

We are currently in the throes of a monumental and historic local government area council’s election. One that will shape the direction of our communities and the Okunano clan for the next few years to come. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that we as a people and free citizens of Nigeria will be faced with an important decision.

Today, we are facing unprecedented challenges. It is time for this generation of Okunanians to address our problems and seize the profound opportunities before us.

Today, our clan, Okunano is calling us to active duty. Our people needs us. Needs us to get off our couches and participate. You can’t just say you love Okunano and then remain silent. Patriotism and love of Okunano are more than just feeding the hungry ones amongst us with momentary fish to quench their hunger for the now; it is accepting the challenge and responsibility to do your part to participate. You can and will make our clan okunano stronger by accepting your responsibility and participating in the political process this election year.

There are actions that we as the people of Okunano can, and must do. This is our starring role in the movie to create a more perfect government. A movie that is based on a democratic, citizen driven government.

According to Ronald Reagan, a one time president of the United States of America, he once said, “We, the people tell the government what to do. It doesn’t tell us. We, the people are the driver – the government is the car, and we decide where it should go and by what route and how fast.” It is time for us to play our part and take control of the car, the car known as the next Chair and council members of our respective Local government areas.

But, how can we do this? Here is a list of actions I have outlined from my research of Roger Rickard’s pocket guide entitled, The 7 Actions of Highly Effective Advocates. They are:
  1. Believe – you can make a difference
  2. Be informed – do your research
  3. Discuss the Issues – spread the word
  4. Get on the Record – write, speak out, act
  5. Be a resource – provide expertise
  6. Volunteer – play a part
  7. Contribute – donate your money or time

We must ensure that our next advocates are educated, engaged and actively supporting our mission.
