Testimonials
of Character and Comportment
Since one sees oneself more by reflection, I
quote pertinent excerpts from my testimonials.
First, from Mr. G. S. Hales, the principal of the higher elementary center (h.
E. C), Methodist College, Uzuakoli, who wrote?
‘’Mr. Ujam was in the higher elementary center during the years 1953 and
1954 and was easily the outstanding student of his course. His average class
position in the first year was 3rd out of 29th and 2nd
out of 28 in the second two certificates at the first attempt, gaining on fewer
than 7 distinctions.
He was awarded a special prize for ‘’the
best all – around student of the year’’, before any regular prize system had
been adopted. But far more important than his academic achievement are Mr. Ujam’s
personal qualities. In integrity, enthusiasm and personally I have no
hesitation in saying that
Mr. Ujam is the best student who has been in H. E. C.
During the last 7 years which is as far as my experience goes. I can recommend
him whole heartedly and unreservedly: he sums up all that is best in the
phrase;; a Christian teacher’’ he will be a credit to his college and his
country wherever he finds himself and I confidently expect great thing from him
in future.
And then from Mr. W h spray principal
general, Methodist College Uzuakoli who said.
‘’i met (Mr. Ujam) in 1954 as one of the
leading students of higher elementary teacher training centre, Methodist college, Uzuakoli. For the
next two years he was the mainstay of the Methodist primary school, Uzuakli, of
which i was then the manager. His call to more responsible work at Oturkpo was
inevitable, but a grievous loss to Uzuakoil.
Throughout our acquaintance i have been
much impressed by Mr. Ujam’s academic ability and promise. He did very well in
his grade ii teacher’s certificate examination in 1954 and has since been
pursuing studies with characteristic success. He is an extremely intelligent,
as well as diligent student and certainly possesses the academic and qualities
necessary for a successful university career.
Moreover, Mr. Ujam’s character and
personality thoroughly recommended him. He is a sincere Christian, a devoted
and active member of the Methodist church. Both in the higher elementary center
here and more challenging conditions of Oturkpo, his has been a fine persistent
witness. He is a person of complete integrity whose high ideals are steadily
pursued and are a constant challenge and help to other. Both in the higher
elementary center and subsequently as a teacher, his work was marked by an
active concern for and interest in, his colleagues and pupils’’
In a special report on my student career in
the higher elementary center Mr.Clutterbuck.
Stated that
‘’at the end of his H
.E. C Course Mr. Ujam was deliberately posted to the primary school attached to
the college, so that he would be available to give demonstration teaching
lessons to future students.
Tutor in H.E.C after four years of teaching
in the primary school; the college took great trouble to effect his recall to
the H.E.C to which he returned. I may say at considerable cost to him, to
become a tutor in January, 1958.
During the year that he has been on the
staff he taught a large variety of subjects, including principles and method of
education arithmetic, history, English literature, P.T and Igbo. All these he
has tackled effectively and with enthusiasm and his conscientiousness and Christian
example has been seen in all that he does. Under his active patronage the
debating society and the S.C.M (of which he is the regional organizational
secretary (have both flourished. In general i may say that his initiative and
capacity for leadership have proved him an extremely valuable member of a
training college staff’’
Finally,
Dr. Akanu ibiam in his own testimonial about me declared:
‘’i recommend him for his
zeal and industry, and for his organizing ability and keen sense of duty. I
have no doubt whatsoever that if mr.ujam had an opportunity to acquire a higher
and further education, he would also bring an additional and rare quality of
service to the education set up in nigeria. Already a good christian and
gentleman and a worthy citizen of nigeria, mr. Ujam is type of ‘’person who
would hold a key post with great trust and responsibility’’.
In retrospect, most of those commendations
have become prophetic
